In the middle of the sea a large tree with a tree house protrudes above the water. Polar bear swims towards it, brown bear arrives in a boat. As the sea level falls, it is also possible for other animals to reach the tree. Gradually the animals leave: only the two bears stay when the first snowflakes fall. Wordless picture book with meaningful plates about double pages. In the sensitive illustrations the tree is the constant factor. The prints are the result of a special collaboration: father Tolman made the etchings of the tree, to which his daughter added the story by means of the colored animal drawings. The eye level of the 'reader' is slightly below the bottom of the hut; the approaching animals can therefore be followed from a frog perspective. Funny is the suggestion of vibration due to the doubling of the tree trunk and the scratchy doodle branches when a rhino hits the tree. The leaf mirror is clear and spatial; the scenes hilarious. There is an atmosphere of peace and tolerance; the seasons determine the life rhythm of the animals. On the cover illustration is polar bear on the back of a whale; it does not play a role in the book.
