"The Best, Greatest, Greatest Grandfather in the World" is a great fun picture book for all children and their grandparents (and grandmothers!). It was written by two-time Golden Griffel winner Jan Paul Schutten.
Booming grandparents Dirk is staying at his grandfather, but he just has to go to school. His grandparents have therefore put together a bicycle for him. And while Dirk thinks how to go to school on that crazy bike, the grandparents are about the hardships they had to undergo in their time on their way to school.
The first picture book by Jan Paul Schutten Jan Paul Schutten, the king of non-fiction for children, has shown this story that he does not turn his hand for a witty picture book. The story is loosely based on Monty Python's world-renowned sketch 'Four Yorkshiremen'. The hilarious illustrations are from Kees de Boer.
Dirk has three grandparents, Balderik, Roderik and Diederik. Dirk, of course, has three grandma's, but they got so crazy about the grandparents that they were living across the street. If Dirk is allowed to stay with the grandparents, they have a "super-de-luxe" bike ready for him to go to school. The tires are soft, the saddle is loose and the wheels are oblique. When Dirk cautiously says about it, they start to learn about what they all had to overcome to get to school on time: on a bike with square wooden wheels, by raindrops as big as melons, across a piece of ocean with pirates or with Two crushed legs and 46 degrees fever! Hilarious picture book full of fantasy in colorful, narrative illustrations in various formats. Lots of text in a letter without writing, next to and in the prints. Nice well-organized edition with a cycling (flying?) Dirk on the cover. Reissue, now without ending page at the end; Previously, the title "Is that all?" Appears. From about 4 years.
