Disarming and beautiful book about coping with author Eva Crabeels
Flamingo has one leg. When he had two legs, he won all flying and running matches and broke all records. His friends Heron, Penguin and Dodo find him a hero. But then Flamingo falls and "his paw is not fixable." His friends are no longer looking at him. A thousand feet with his five hundred hands and feet will help him. To dream you do not need any legs, no friends.
This print book was inspired by Belgian athlete Marc Herremans who broke his back and got paralyzed during training.
It contains masterpieces of award-winning illustrator Marije Tolman who sets in mixed technique, including ink, paint, chalk, collage, a beautiful expressive fluorescent pink flamingo and his bird lovers. The change in prints, sometimes disturbed and sad, than swirling, show flamingo's repulsion and anger and then his decision not to continue to mourn.
The short, powerful and humorous text is in plain font with the ones written in the prints. Particularly beautiful edition, in remarkably narrow high format with firm cover.
